INDIA | July 3 India’s newborns are under threat and air pollution may be the reason.
According to NFHS (2019-21) data, 13% of babies are born prematurely and 17% with low birth weight. A joint study by IIT Delhi, IIPS Mumbai, and international researchers found that a 10 µg/m³ rise in PM2.5 increases:
- Premature birth risk by 12%
- Low birth weight risk by 5%
Pollution-heavy states like UP, Bihar, Delhi, and Punjab are worst affected.
