In a landmark decision, the Government of India has designated 23 September as Ayurveda Day, effective from 2025. The announcement ushers in a new era for Ayurveda, aligning tradition with global wellness on a fixed calendar date.

Context & Background:
Since its inception in 2016, Ayurveda Day has been observed variably based on Dhanvantari Jayanti, which shifts annually according to the Hindu lunar calendar. However, a Gazette notification issued in March 2025 fixes 23 September as the annual date for Ayurveda Day, reinforcing its international visibility and standardizing its observance globally.
Official Statements & Theme:
Union Health and Ayush Minister Shri Prataprao Jadhav commented, “Ayurveda is not just a healthcare system, it is a science rooted in harmony between the individual and the environment. By designating 23 September as Ayurveda Day, India has given Ayurveda a global calendar identity.”
The 2025 theme: “Ayurveda for People & Planet” emphasizes the holistic reach of Ayurveda, aspiring to promote wellness among individuals while supporting ecological balance.
Momentum & Impact:
Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha highlighted that Ayurveda Day has blossomed into a global movement since its launch in 2016. A recent national NSSO survey confirms Ayurveda remains the most commonly used healthcare system across both rural and urban India.
Last year, the 9th Ayurveda Day in 2024 was marked by several milestone developments: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase II of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), launched four Centres of Excellence in Ayurveda, and rolled out the nationwide “Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan” campaign, all as part of healthcare initiatives worth approximately ₹12,850 crore.
Global Reach & 2025 Vision:
Building on that momentum, Ayurveda Day 2025 is designed as more than a ceremonial observance. It aims to position Ayurveda as a viable, modern solution for addressing lifestyle disorders, climate-related illnesses, and stress. These are the issues of mounting global concern.
Celebrations are expected to feature a diverse range of activities: awareness campaigns, youth-focused events, wellness consultations, and international collaborations, orchestrated by the Ministry of Ayush and its affiliated institutions. In 2024, events were held in approximately 150 countries, signaling Ayurveda’s surging global footprint.
