A national survey of 272 family physicians across 28 states has sounded the alarm: India needs 15,000 new family doctors annually by 2030 to meet growing demands. Despite being the backbone of primary care, family physicians remain under-supported and under-recognized in policy and academia.
Dr. Raman Kumar (AFPI) stressed the urgent need to shift from a specialist-driven, urban-centric system to one that institutionalizes family medicine, particularly in rural care.
