On the 150th foundation day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), India unveiled Mission Mausam, a bold, intersectional initiative under the Ministry of Earth Sciences aimed at building a weather‑ready and climate‑smart nation. Announced in Parliament by MoS Jitendra Singh, the mission brings together cutting-edge technology, predictive science, and outreach strategies to strengthen climate resilience across sectors.

India’s growing vulnerability to extreme weather, be it floods, heatwaves, or unpredictable rainfall, demands a transformative strategy. Mission Mausam addresses this through high-resolution observations, enhanced forecasting, and last-mile service delivery. It introduces tools like next-generation radars, advanced satellites, high-performance computing, AI/ML modeling, and decision support systems aimed at Panchayat‑level forecasting (5–6 km resolution), promising far more localized and accurate insights than before.

A key part of the mission is the establishment of the Climate Research & Services (CRS division under IMD in Pune, and the development of the National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS). This framework is being built with multi-stakeholder inputs, from agriculture and health to disaster management sectors, to tailor climate support systems that serve both policymakers and communities.

This initiative also strengthens India’s standing in global climate technology, enabling seamless cooperation with international agencies in the realms of forecasting, early warning systems, and climate adaptation.

Mission Mausam isn’t just about prediction, it’s about preparation. Whether safeguarding farmers, urban residents, or policymakers, this mission signals India’s commitment to anticipating climate risks, enabling informed response, and safeguarding lives.
