Uttar Pradesh Accelerates Secondary Education Reforms Through Infrastructure and Digital Push

The Uttar Pradesh government is driving a large-scale transformation of secondary education through infrastructure upgrades and digital investments. The state currently operates 29,216 secondary schools, making the sector central to human capital development, economic growth, and social equity.

Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, education reforms focus on access, quality, and employability. The government has completed 41 new intermediate colleges and 215 government high schools. It has approved 60 more intermediate colleges. At present, 280 newly established government high schools and intermediate colleges are functional across Uttar Pradesh.

A major milestone is the launch of the first Sainik School of Purvanchal and the second Sainik School of Uttar Pradesh in Gorakhpur. The move strengthens defence-oriented education in eastern UP and promotes discipline-led learning.

Project Alankar Upgrades School Infrastructure#

Project Alankar remains the backbone of secondary school infrastructure reform. The initiative has upgraded 480 government schools so far. Facilities now include library rooms, 272 laboratories, 1,116 multipurpose halls, 577 toilets, 1,006 drinking water units, and 464 new classrooms.

The state has built boundary walls in 1,167 schools. It has completed electrification in 184 schools. These upgrades improve safety and classroom conditions.

Government spending reflects strong commitment. Funding rose from ₹98.31 crore in 2022–23 to ₹422 crore in 2023–24. It increased further to ₹508.58 crore in 2024–25. For 2025–26, the state allocated ₹479.49 crore, with ₹52.14 crore already released.

Grant Support for Aided Secondary Schools#

The government also supports aided secondary schools through targeted grants. In 2023–24, 152 schools received ₹69.30 crore. In 2024–25, 316 schools secured grants worth ₹141.74 crore. For 2025–26, 86 schools have already received ₹2.97 crore.

Sports and Digital Learning Expansion#

The state is strengthening holistic education through sports and technology. It is building indoor mini stadiums in government intermediate colleges for boys and girls. In 2024–25, the government approved ₹49.68 crore for sports facilities in 23 colleges. The Chief Minister laid foundation stones in June 2025. Another ₹50 crore is allocated for 2025–26.

Digital learning is expanding fast. 778 ICT laboratories are operational in secondary schools. Smart classrooms are under implementation in 1,236 schools. Under Samagra Shiksha (Secondary), the state established 101 Atal Tinkering Labs in 2023–24, promoting STEM education and innovation skills.

PM SHRI Schools and Teacher Recruitment#

In line with National Education Policy 2020, 145 government secondary schools in Uttar Pradesh have been selected as PM SHRI Schools for 2025–26. These schools will serve as model institutions for inclusive and quality education.

The government has also accelerated teacher recruitment under Mission Rozgar. It replaced interviews with transparent written exams. Over the last eight years, the state appointed 8,966 educators. This includes 6,808 Assistant Teachers, 1,939 Lecturers, and 219 Principals, selected through the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission.

Impact on Secondary Education in Uttar Pradesh#

These reforms are closing infrastructure gaps. Learning environments are improving. Digital access is expanding. Sports education is gaining space. Teacher availability is strengthening.

By combining infrastructure development, digital education, and human resources, the Uttar Pradesh government is building a future-ready secondary education system. The reforms support skills, innovation, and long-term socio-economic growth.
