Uttar Pradesh’s Transformation Journey: Nine Years of the Yogi Government

Uttar Pradesh has seen major improvements in law and order, infrastructure, and economic growth over the past nine years under the Yogi Adityanath government. The state now aims to build on this momentum to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

Nine years ago, Uttar Pradesh faced persistent challenges in areas such as law and order, investment inflows, and overall development, often reflected in the “BIMARU” label historically associated with the state. Speaking at the Collectorate auditorium in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Minister-in-Charge Brijesh Singh presented the government’s perspective on the state’s progress over the past nine years. Addressing journalists, he outlined a range of statistics and policy measures that the administration says demonstrate structural changes under the Yogi Adityanath government.

A Government Built on Three Pillars

Singh told journalists that the Yogi government’s model rests on three foundations: rule of law, transparent administration, and last-mile delivery. Each pillar has produced measurable results.

The law and order overhaul is perhaps the most visible change. The government adopted a Zero Tolerance policy. Over ₹4,000 crore worth of criminal and mafia assets were seized or demolished. Fifty-three organised crime gangs were eliminated. The UP-112 emergency response time dropped from one hour to six minutes. More than 2.19 lakh police personnel were recruited to make this possible.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has spoken about this transformation directly. In a post on X on March 18, 2026, he wrote about the double-engine government’s work and stated, “The New Uttar Pradesh of New India has, in nine years, become a golden chapter of reconstruction. The foundation of the state’s growing strength lies in the youth, women, and farmers.”

Economy Triples, Poverty Falls

The numbers on growth are striking. Uttar Pradesh’s Gross State Domestic Product has risen from ₹13 lakh crore to approximately ₹36 lakh crore. Per capita income has tripled. The state now contributes 9.1% to the national economy.

Speaking on the state’s economic position, CM Yogi Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the growth engine of the nation and confirmed that it is now the second-largest economy among Indian states and a revenue surplus state.

The welfare numbers are equally significant. According to NITI Aayog’s own assessment, 6 crore people in the state have crossed the poverty line. About 15 crore people received free rations. The Ayushman health scheme now covers 9 crore people through 5.60 crore cards.

Women, Farmers, and Youth at the Centre

Women’s workforce participation climbed from 13% to 36%. Over 1.06 crore women joined self-help groups. Eighteen lakh became “Lakhpati Didis,” earning over ₹1 lakh annually. Farmers received more than ₹3.15 lakh crore in sugarcane payments. About 3.12 crore farmers got ₹99,000 crore through PM Kisan Samman Nidhi via direct bank transfer. Youth received over 9 lakh government jobs, and 49.86 lakh students were given tablets and smartphones.

At the launch of the book ‘Nav Nirman Ke 9 Varsh’ in Lucknow, CM Yogi told the gathering that the state has achieved remarkable growth in security, investment, infrastructure, and employment, giving Uttar Pradesh a new identity under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Infrastructure That Changed the Map

In 2017, UP had two expressways. Today, 22 are either complete or under construction. Airports grew from 2 to 16 operational, with 8 more being built. Metro services now run in 7 cities. The Namo Bharat rapid rail links Delhi and Meerut. North India’s first semiconductor unit is being set up in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar. That district alone is now home to the upcoming Noida International Airport.

The Adityanath administration has described trust and technology as the twin engines of UP’s transformation, with the state economy having expanded threefold during his tenure. The government backed this claim with a record budget of ₹9.12 lakh crore for 2026-27.

A Target for 2030

The government has outlined an ambitious vision for the coming decade. Uttar Pradesh aims to transform itself into a one trillion dollar economy by 2029 to 2030, positioning the state as a major driver of India’s economic growth. With private investment proposals reportedly exceeding ₹50 lakh crore and the potential to generate more than one crore jobs, the focus now shifts to converting these commitments into sustainable economic opportunities across sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, technology, and agriculture.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attributed the progress of the past nine years to the broader development vision led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and emphasized that the achievements reflect the collective aspirations of Uttar Pradesh’s 25 crore citizens.

As Uttar Pradesh moves into the next phase of its development journey, sustaining this momentum will require a continued focus on inclusive growth, strong infrastructure, skill development, and innovation driven industries. Strengthening social indicators and ensuring balanced development across regions will also be essential to maintaining long term progress.

The past nine years have marked a notable shift in Uttar Pradesh’s development narrative. The years ahead will determine how effectively this progress can be consolidated and whether the state can fully emerge as one of India’s key engines of economic growth.
