NITI Aayog and UNICEF Join Hands to Boost Maternal and Child Nutrition in India’s Aspirational Districts

NITI Aayog and UNICEF have partnered to improve maternal and child nutrition in India’s Aspirational Districts and Blocks through better healthcare delivery, awareness campaigns, and CSR-funded nutrition initiatives. The collaboration will also strengthen Anganwadi infrastructure, enhance ICDS services, and build the capacity of frontline workers to improve nutrition outcomes in underserved regions.

India has taken another step to strengthen healthcare and nutrition in its most underserved regions. The government’s policy think tank, NITI Aayog, has signed a Statement of Intent with UNICEF India to improve maternal and child nutrition in Aspirational Districts and Aspirational Blocks across the country.

The partnership focuses on strengthening healthcare delivery, improving nutrition awareness, and mobilising corporate support to address malnutrition. The agreement was signed by Rohit Kumar, Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme at NITI Aayog, and Arjan de Wagt, Deputy Representative at UNICEF India.

Officials said the collaboration will combine the policy and governance framework of NITI Aayog with UNICEF’s technical expertise in child health and nutrition.

Strengthening the Aspirational Districts Programme

The initiative will support strategic interventions in districts and blocks that lag behind national development indicators. These areas are part of the Aspirational Districts Programme, a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India in 2018 to accelerate development in underperforming regions.

Under the new partnership, the focus will remain on maternal and child nutrition, which remains a key public health challenge in several districts.

Rohit Kumar of NITI Aayog said partnerships with development organisations play a critical role in addressing social sector challenges.

He stated that collaborations with institutions such as UNICEF will help “strengthen efforts to address critical health and nutrition challenges and enhance last-mile service delivery in high-priority regions.”

He also emphasised that the Aspirational Districts Programme has shown the power of “convergence, collaboration and data-driven governance in accelerating development outcomes.”

IMPAct4Nutrition Platform to Mobilise CSR Funds

A key feature of the collaboration is the use of UNICEF’s IMPAct4Nutrition (I4N) platform. The initiative aims to bring together businesses, public sector enterprises, and industry associations to invest in nutrition programmes.

Through this platform, companies will be encouraged to direct their Corporate Social Responsibility funding toward maternal and child nutrition projects in underserved districts.

According to the government, UNICEF will provide technical expertise and support engagement with private sector stakeholders to channel CSR investments into nutrition-focused initiatives.

UNICEF India Deputy Representative Arjan de Wagt noted that partnerships between governments and development organisations are essential to improving nutrition outcomes at scale. He said coordinated action between institutions, communities and the private sector is necessary to tackle malnutrition effectively.

Focus on Anganwadi Infrastructure and Community Awareness

The partnership outlines several priority areas for intervention. One major focus is strengthening Anganwadi infrastructure under the Integrated Child Development Services programme.

Better infrastructure will help improve child care services, early childhood nutrition and health monitoring in rural and remote areas.

The programme will also promote nutrition literacy among mothers and caregivers. Community awareness campaigns will encourage families to adopt balanced diets and utilise health services more effectively.

Officials said the initiative will also improve the uptake of ICDS services, which include supplementary nutrition, immunisation support and health check-ups for mothers and children.

Capacity Building for Frontline Workers

Another important pillar of the partnership is capacity building for frontline workers such as Anganwadi workers and community health staff.

Training programmes will help these workers deliver better nutrition services, track child growth more effectively and promote healthy practices in local communities.

Government officials believe that empowering frontline workers will strengthen the last-mile delivery of nutrition programmes.

NITI Aayog said the collaboration will also create knowledge-sharing platforms where successful models from different districts can be documented and replicated across the country.

Multi-Stakeholder Approach to Development

Experts say the partnership reflects a broader shift in India’s development strategy toward multi-stakeholder collaboration.

The initiative aims to bring together government agencies, international organisations, businesses and local communities to tackle complex social challenges such as malnutrition.

In a statement shared on social media, NITI Aayog said the agreement seeks to “institutionalise and expand efforts to strengthen nutrition outcomes in Aspirational Districts and Blocks through the IMPAct4Nutrition platform.”

Public health experts have repeatedly stressed that improving nutrition is essential for long-term economic and social development.

A Step Toward Better Human Development Outcomes

The NITI Aayog-UNICEF partnership comes at a time when India continues to focus on improving child health indicators and reducing malnutrition.

By combining policy coordination, private sector investment and grassroots capacity building, the initiative aims to strengthen healthcare and nutrition services in the country’s most vulnerable districts.

Officials say the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that every child and mother in India has access to adequate nutrition, healthcare and support systems needed for healthy development.
