- Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has crossed 90 crore ABHA accounts, creating one of the world’s largest digital health ecosystems and enabling seamless access to digital health records across India.
- The initiative connects hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities through a secure digital network, improving healthcare accessibility, record sharing, and patient convenience.
- While the milestone marks significant progress, experts emphasize the need to increase active health record usage and interoperability to fully realize the mission’s potential.
THE NUMBER THAT REWRITES THE STORY
Somewhere in the crowded corridors of a government hospital in Lucknow, a nurse scans a QR code. In 4 seconds, she sees the patient’s blood test from 2 months ago, the prescription from a private clinic in Kanpur, and the discharge summary from a district hospital. Nothing was lost in transit. Nothing was typed twice. This is the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) operating as designed and as of June 2026, it has done this for 90 crore Indians.
The milestone of 90 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs) was confirmed in PIB’s June 1, 2026, summary. In 2021, when ABDM was launched, the count stood at 14.7 crore. The scale of adoption in under 5 years is without precedent in digital public health globally.

| 14.7 Cr ABHAs Created (2021) | 90 Cr+ ABHAs Created (2026) | 36 States/UTs Connected | 20.49 Cr ABHA App Registrations |
WHAT ABHA ACTUALLY DOES
An Ayushman Bharat Health Account is a 14-digit digital health identity. Every diagnostic report, prescription, discharge summary, and vaccination record can be linked to it. With the citizen’s consent, any connected healthcare provider across states, institutions and public-private divide can access this record. The ABHA App has seen substantial uptake, with tens of crore citizens using it to manage their health records digitally, and 27,328 healthcare facilities across 36 states and union territories are connected to the ABDM network as of March 31, 2026.
Uttar Pradesh leads with 15.3 crore ABHAs. Rajasthan and Maharashtra have crossed 7 crore accounts each. The pattern is encouraging as the adoption is not confined to urbanised states with mature digital infrastructure. The mission has penetrated India’s most populous and historically underserved healthcare markets.
THE BROADER HEALTHCARE TRANSFORMATION
ABDM is the 4th pillar of Ayushman Bharat, sitting alongside the PM-JAY insurance scheme (now covering 12 crore families up to Rs 5 lakh/year), Health and Wellness Centres, and the PM Bhartiya Janaushadhi network providing generic medicines at 50-80% below branded prices. An NSO survey of 1.39 lakh households in 2025 found that a significant portion of hospitalised patients were paying below Rs 1,100 out-of-pocket.
The Union Budget 2026-27 increased the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare allocation by nearly 10% to Rs 1,06,530 crore which is a 194% cumulative rise since FY 2014-15. The SAHI strategy for AI in healthcare, launched at the AI Summit in February 2026, positions India as the first nation in South Asia to have a national AI health strategy, integrating predictive diagnostics and specialist shortage mitigation into public health delivery.
THE ACCOUNTABILITY IMPERATIVE
90 crore accounts is a powerful number. The harder question is what percentage of those accounts contain active, usable health records, not just registered identities. The National Health Authority must publish quarterly data distinguishing between ABHA creation and ABHA utilisation. A health ID with no records attached is a digital placeholder, not a health system.
India has built the rails. The obligation now is to run trains on them. Every district hospital, every Jan Aushadhi Kendra, every sub-centre under the National Health Mission must be mandated to generate and upload records to ABDM-connected systems within defined timelines. The 90-crore milestone deserves celebration. But the next benchmark must be interoperability rate and it must be published, verified, and accountable.
